Aintree Race Course

Aintree has been host to the Grand National festival for 166 years. April 5th will see Aintree host he 167th Annual Grand National steeple chase with prize funding for the main event topping seven figures for the first time ever. Aintree really does have it all to offer during the Grand National.

Crabbies Grand National

What's in a name ?

If you're a little bit confused about the name it's understandable. The most prestigious race that takes the top billing on the 5th at 4.15 is the Grand National steeple chase. While it has been sponsored by John Smith's as long as memory serves, Crabbie's are the new (and welcome!) sponsors for the 2014 race and the foreseeable future.

Horses for courses

Of the 115 entrants for the big race, we are currently (March 1st) down to 100 and nearly into double digits. We're still a long way though from the starting line-up which will at most be the 40 highest rated rides from the current field. Avoid backing a non-runner by checking back regularly !

So how do you back a winner?

You'll find a lot of tips being bandied about for the big race, but remember there's no such thing as a gift horse in the National ! Odds are a reflection of how popular a horse is, so the lower the odds, the more people like a horse has. The best advice I could give if you're having a flutter is go with your heart. It's an accomplishment just to finish this race so truly almost anyone can win !
